Details

Please note: DATE & VENUE change for this May NY Tech Meetup -

We're going back to Cooper Union this month, *NOT* IAC, and it will be on the 2nd Tuesday rather than the 1st - that's Tuesday May 13th *NOT* the 6th.

So, our next NY Tech Meetup is:
Tuesday May 13th, 7pm @ Cooper Union's Great Hall, 7 East 7th St (@ 3rd Ave)

Sorry to the folks who have already RSVPed - you'll have to re-RSVP here, but to those of you who got shut out we'll be able to handle 600 people at Cooper so we're opening 400 slots now and 200 more next week on Friday May 9th.

We've heard you folks who have been veteran NY Tech Meetuppers and been shut out of RSVP slots in the past, so we're giving priority to those of you who are *not* new members.

For new members - if we have slots left after the older members RSVP "yes" then we'll open up the slots to you, if not, sorry, you'll have to wait 'til next time.

As Always - SPECIAL THANKS to the VC firm of DFJ Gotham http://www.dfjgotham.... the law firm of Wilson Sonsini http://www.wsgr.com/W... and IAC http://iacbuilding.co... for their sponsorship and support!

Also, THANKS to Cooper Union http://www.cooper.edu... for having us back!

As a first timer, I found the experience to be like the technology version of Burning Man.

Definitely worth going to, I'd go next month. Also, don't get discouraged if the seating is "full". In the end, a lot of seats were empty. Maybe they should increase the number of rsvps.

I agree, the venue is not ideal, but at least the presenters made it worth it. Still happy with the event.

It was so noisy. I had a hard time meeting people. There should be an art discussion group.

Wish I could be there. Interested in first thoughts and market buzz on the new Blackberry 9000 this week and what it means for new apps especially 2.0 media following iPhone success. Open to messages on this. David

I think Dawn says this morning that we have to RSVP again since they've moved the meet. Is that correct? However meetup.com gives my RSVP as 'yes' and 'the meeting is full.' Can anyone clarify?

April's presentations were great, usable stuff. Introducing twiddla to my research group at next week's meeting. Trying to figure out where/how to incorporate Trendrr. Can't wait to see what's up in May.

Who Attended

It's estimated that 595 people attended.

  • Frederic Guarino
"Great presentation by Summize and ZocDocs !"

  • vicki winters
"i like the new (to me) way you have organized the discussion set up"

  • Mark Chackerian
"some good presentations this time--I particularly liked zocdoc"

  • Anuj Mathur
"Presenters / format was great. Really enjoyed it. Will attend again. Technical difficulties with wifi were a little ironic given the nature of the meetup. Also, attendee lists should include whether ppl donated online. It didn't slow down the process much, but it's prob a good idea."

  • Yaritsa Arenas
"In regards to the presenters I was very impressed. I felt that I took away something from every single site announced, which is awesome. The work out there is really getting great, it's very exciting too see the level of work that NY Techies are putting out there."

  • Nick Oliva
"My first Meetup! I really enjoyed it... Loved the "Why?" question for firef.ly... cracked-up that everyone gave an ovation to one of the presenters for showing that Google can be used to translate any Web page!"

  • Rob Rizzo
"Was my first NY Tech Meetup, and I really enjoyed it. Notwithstanding the techinical difficulties, which made things a little slow at points. "

  • Jon Thornton
"This was the most disorganized meetup I've attended so far. Lack of stable WiFi was a huge problem. You think you'd get more for $10. The actual presentations were excellent."

  • debnewman
"Next time, make sure the Internet connection works. It's frustrating to listen to someone give a demo and have to keep logging on over and over again. "

  • Douglas Kersten
    "Had fun, Great stuff!"

  • Tenley
"Good info, well paced presentations. One suggestion -- Remind speakers to enunciate more clearly, so people don't have to ask them to repeat key info. Great meeting!"

  • peter kestenbaum
"Identity crisis.. Tech meetup that continues to focus on website apps- Maybe it should be called the NY on line media and website app meetup "

  • Kerry-Anne
"I really liked the meeting... the choatic networking session afterwards was a bit crazy though. I wasn't sure who was hiring and who was just trying to make small talk. All in all good stuff."

  • gau
    "Just great. "

  • Trace
"wanted way more networking time. *before* the talks. Love the #s for the breakout sessions idea."

  • Josh
"Incredible! My first of many I plan to attend! Thanks to the group that set this up. Fantastic!"

  • Jessie Carter
    "great presentations"

  • Sharon Tolpin
    "Great presentations - "

  • Seth Weinstein
"Good overall. Love hearing about new techologies, and general networking opportunities -- and it looks like there was some effort to screen out the multilevel marketers unlike other tech networking events I've been to. I do tech demo's all the time, it may be good for some of the presenters to go through a demo 101 review before going on cold -- would really help their pitch."

  • soulsonic
"best part was when scott grabbed the mike out of that girls hand that was promoting the west coast startup"

  • David Markowitz
"some very interesting cos. this month...need to get some better internet connections!"

  • Sedef Onder
"The demos were pretty good, as they always are. The wireless connection was terrible, as was apparent with the presenters demos, which kept freezing and/or crashing. "

  • Y. Harrow
"I was impressed by all the new technologies presented and I look forward to seeing what other innovative creations the tech community will turn out."

  • Charles
"I thought it was a little too focused on business. I went to meet engineers and creatives, and I had a hard time finding them."

  • Celly
"Scott grabbed the mike away from me when I was only trying to help a friend of mine recruit for a startup. Just because it was in Palo Alto. That was just purely rude and disrespectful. For those of you who support this action, you are just bitter that you cannot work for a great software startup in Palo Alto. I am just being objective here. If you don't support such announcement, you should either say it in your NY Tech meetup website or announce it at the meetup. Given that you did NOT provide any of this information, Soctt, you have no rights to grab the mike from me and tell me to get out. Oh, and Scott, you just trashed Peter Thiel's new startup. Good job."

  • Josh Rosenberg
"Asides from some slight technical problems (broken internet) The whole thing was great. There were a number of great presentations, and a lot fo friendly like-minded people. "
