April 2007 NY Tech Meetup

  • April 3, 2007 · 7:00 PM
  • The Great Hall, Cooper Union

6 people get 5 minutes each to demo something cool to New York's tech community. a mashup of Astronomy + World News; the "Fastr Flickr Searchr Savr Sharr"; an interesting wiki thing; web video with clickable tables of contents; a citizen media site that pays content producers in advance; & a couple others... Thanks to DFJ Gotham and Wilson Sonsini.

Billed as a tech meetup but was very much commercially web-oriented software, not general technology. i would advise a change in the meetup name to reflect the nature of the meetup more precisely? the host had financial interests in 2 of the speaker's presentations. This was disclosed but i wondered about the speakers who did not appear, e.g. the ones who could not speak as all slots were full. and also the ordering of speakers (the final 2 were related to the host) in a nutshell - a pro, 5minute marketing gig reminding me strongly of internet hype bygone days when 5 minute standups were commonplace in VC circles.

Have a cash bar with beer and wine and let people network from 7:00 to 7:30 then have presentations. Leave bar open during and after presentations. Off site bar is no good, too loud, too far and too few people go.

Way to keep it moving. Brevity is the key to a clean presentation.

    good pace...great companies.
I'd encourage Scott to be vigilent in treating all companies equitably - reagardless of his investment interests. Daylife stikes me as an example.
Also, I'd recommend handing out (or making e-available in a advance) a one-pager listing all companies as an FAQ (CEO, company location, tech platform, bus. model, etc). People ask many of these questions for every vendor

Fantastic mix of presenters ... A creative one, way out there. A visual/photo content one, love those. A fun, childish one.
